Systeme.io Review: Which Free-Plan Limit You'll Hit First (and What It Costs to Fix)
The free plan is generous on contacts and tight on automation. Here's where it runs out for your kind of business, and the cheapest fix.
Heads-up: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you sign up through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't decide our picks. Here's how we review.
Is the Systeme.io free plan really enough, or is there a catch? There is one, but it's not the one most people expect.
The free plan gives you 2,000 contacts, yet most solo creators run out of something else first: automation. You get one tag, one automation rule and one email campaign, and a single freebie with a welcome sequence can use up all three.
This Systeme.io review shows which limit you're likely to hit first based on what you sell, what it costs to fix (usually $17 a month), the setup trap that catches Gmail users, and who should skip Systeme.io altogether.
Quick verdict

Systeme.io at a glance
Systeme.io is an all-in-one platform: sales funnels, checkout, email marketing, online courses, communities, a website and blog, and a tool to run your own affiliate program. Everything shares one contact list, so someone who opts in on your funnel lands on your email list and can buy and access your course without any connecting apps.
There are four plans: Free, Startup, Webinar and Unlimited. They share the same core tools. What changes is how many of each thing you can create.

How we reviewed Systeme.io
We read Systeme.io's pricing page, plan data and help center, mapped each limit to common creator setups, and read low-star user reviews to see what goes wrong in practice. We didn't run a paid account for this review. Our full method is on how we review.
Which free-plan limit you'll hit first
The useful question is which limit you will reach first. Find the row closest to your plan:
| What you're building | Limit you hit first | Cheapest fix |
|---|---|---|
| One freebie and a welcome sequence | Probably none for a while | Stay on Free |
| Two or more freebies | Tags and email campaigns | Startup, $17/mo |
| One freebie plus one paid product | Tags and automation rules | Startup, $17/mo |
| Free mini-course plus a paid course | Courses (1) and students (500) | Startup, $17/mo |
| Evergreen (automated) webinar funnel | Evergreen webinars (none on Free) | Webinar, $47/mo |
| A list heading past 2,000 people | Contacts | Startup (5,000) or Webinar (10,000) |
| Two brands on two domains | Custom domains (1) | Startup (3 domains) or a sub-account |
Why automation runs out before contacts
In a typical setup, each freebie needs its own tag (so you know who downloaded what), its own automation rule (to apply that tag or start the emails) and its own email campaign (the welcome sequence). Telling buyers apart from leads usually takes one more tag and one more rule.
Here's the math for a common side-hustle setup: a printable checklist, a short quiz and a $47 mini-course.
- Tags: about 3 (two freebies plus buyers). Free allows 1.
- Automation rules: about 3. Free allows 1.
- Email campaigns: 2 welcome sequences. Free allows 1.
- Contacts: probably a few hundred in the first months. Free allows 2,000.
You'd outgrow Free on automation while using a fraction of your contacts. Startup's 10 tags, rules and campaigns cover it with room to spare.
The free-course trap
Systeme.io's pricing page advertises "Unlimited students", but the plan data caps Free at 500 students and 1 course. A free mini-course plus a paid course is two courses, and a popular freebie can pass 500 students quickly. Students are unlimited on paid plans, so Startup fixes both.
What it costs to fix each limit
Here's what each upgrade buys you.
Startup: $17 a month
Startup raises contacts to 5,000 and gives you 10 funnels, 5 courses, 10 tags, 10 automation rules, 5 workflows, 10 email campaigns, 3 custom domains and unlimited students. For a solo creator with one or two products, this is the plan we'd suggest. It fixes every row in the table above except webinars.
Webinar: $47 a month
Webinar adds 10 evergreen webinars and raises the limits to 10,000 contacts, 50 funnels, 20 courses, 100 tags and 100 automation rules. Choose it if automated webinars are how you sell, or your list is heading past 5,000.
Unlimited: $97 a month
Unlimited lifts contacts to 1,000,000 and most other limits to 100,000. The pricing page says it also includes a free migration service.
Paying yearly
Systeme.io calls annual billing "2 months free". In plain numbers, Startup costs $170 a year instead of $204 on monthly billing, which works out to about $14 a month. Webinar costs $470 a year instead of $564, and Unlimited costs $970 a year instead of $1,164.
Running separate brands? Every plan allows unlimited sub-accounts, each with the same limits as the main plan, though that means separate lists and logins.
Start on Systeme.io's free plan →No credit card needed, according to Systeme.io
0% transaction fees: what they're worth
Systeme.io's pricing page says: "No transaction fees. Accept payments using Stripe or PayPal at no extra cost." You still pay Stripe's or PayPal's processing fees, as you would on any platform. But Systeme.io itself takes no cut, on any plan, Free included.
That matters more than it sounds. Here's what some entry plans cost at $1,000 a month in course sales, before processing fees, which apply everywhere:
- Systeme.io Startup: $17. No platform fee.
- Teachable Starter: $39 + 7.5% of $1,000 ($75) = $114.
- Podia Mover: $49 + 5% of $1,000 ($50) = $99.
- Thinkific Basic with Thinkific Payments: $54. Thinkific Payments charges 2.9% + 30¢ (US), with no Thinkific cut. If you use your own Stripe instead, Thinkific adds 5% on Basic, so $104.
- Kajabi Basic with Kajabi Payments: $179.
The gap widens as sales grow, because a percentage fee scales with you. For a full side-by-side of course platforms, see Thinkific vs Teachable.
Systeme.io takes 0% of your sales on every plan. Enter your monthly sales to see what dedicated course platforms would cost you once their plan price and any platform fee are added, then compare it with Systeme.io's flat $0, $17 or $47.
What Systeme.io does well
One contact list for everything. Opt-in, checkout, course access and emails run from one account, with no apps to connect.
Funnels with sales tools built in. Order bumps, one-click upsells, coupons and A/B tests are part of the checkout. Free gives you one of each to try, and Startup raises most of them to 10.
Unlimited email sends. Every plan, Free included, can "Send unlimited emails to all of your contacts", per the pricing page. Many email tools price by send volume or list size, so this is generous.
Your own affiliate program. The pricing page lists affiliate program management on all plans, so customers can promote your products for a commission without a separate app.
Support on every plan. Systeme.io advertises 24/7 online support with "an average response time of under 2 hours". That's the company's claim, and some users report a different experience (see the complaints section below).
What we like
- Free plan with 2,000 contacts, which Systeme.io says "never expires and does not require a credit card"
- 0% transaction fees on every plan
- Funnels, email, courses, community and website in one account
- Unlimited email sends on all plans
- Low-cost upgrade path: $17/mo, or $170/yr
- Unlimited sub-accounts on every plan
Watch out for
- Free plan automation is tight: 1 tag, 1 rule, 1 workflow, 1 campaign
- Free caps courses at 1 and students at 500
- Evergreen webinars start on the $47 plan
- Gmail and Yahoo addresses can't be used to send
- Going over a limit can pause opt-ins, payments and course access
- Pricing-page wording ("unlimited funnels") overstates Startup's limits

What users complain about (and how to protect yourself)
Systeme.io's overall Trustpilot rating is high, but its 1- and 2-star reviews cluster around a few themes worth knowing. These are individual reports, not typical experiences:
- Support quality. Reviewers describe slow or scripted replies, with one calling the answers "not actual help".
- Account reviews and blocks. Several reviewers say their account was restricted or put under review, one "without any prior notice".
- Migration timelines. Some say migrations took far longer than first quoted, for example "1-2 weeks" that became "7-8 weeks".
- Billing after cancellation. A few reviewers report charges or refund disputes after they cancelled.
- Bugs on live pages. Some mention forms or upsell-page buttons not working reliably.
How to protect yourself:
- Export your contacts and keep your course files (videos, PDFs) outside Systeme.io, on a regular schedule.
- Test checkout end to end with a real low-price purchase before every launch.
- Don't launch in the same week you migrate. Leave a buffer in case the move runs long.
- Watch your usage so you don't trip the 3-day warning, and upgrade before a launch, not during it.
- Keep a record of cancellation (screenshot or email) if you downgrade or leave.
Systeme.io vs ClickFunnels
ClickFunnels is the name most people compare Systeme.io with. Its cheapest plan, Launch, costs $97 a month on monthly billing. Here's how that lines up with Systeme.io at a similar list size:
| Feature | Systeme.io Webinar | Systeme.io Unlimited | ClickFunnels Launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $47 | $97 | $97 |
| Paid yearly | $470/yr (about $39/mo) | $970/yr (about $81/mo) | $81/mo |
| Contacts | 10,000 | Unlimited | 10,000 |
| Funnels | 50 | Unlimited | Unlimited ("Limited Time") |
| Courses | 20 | Unlimited | 3 |
| Custom domains | 10 | Unlimited | 5 |
| Email sends | Unlimited | Unlimited | 50,000/mo |
At 10,000 contacts, Systeme.io's Webinar plan costs less than half of ClickFunnels Launch and allows more courses and domains. ClickFunnels advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you're starting from zero, though, Systeme.io's free plan is the cheaper way to learn whether funnels work for you.
Your first 30 days on the free plan
Here's a simple launch plan that fits inside the free plan's limits. It uses 1 funnel, 1 tag, 1 rule, 1 campaign and 1 course.
- Week 1: Set up the foundations. Connect your custom domain and a sender address on it (see "Before you start"). Connect Stripe or PayPal. Write down what your one tag will mean, such as "lead".
- Week 2: Build your opt-in funnel. Create one freebie, an opt-in page and a thank-you page. Use your one automation rule to tag new subscribers and your one campaign for a 3–5 email welcome sequence. New to this? Read how to start an email list.
- Week 3: Build your offer. Put your course (or a short paid workshop) in your one course slot, then build a sales page and checkout with an order bump. Use a second funnel for this.
- Week 4: Test and launch. Buy your own product with a real card, check the course access email, export a contact backup, then email your list. Keep an eye on the plan usage screen.
When you want a second freebie or want to tag buyers separately, that's your signal to move to Startup.
Who should skip Systeme.io
- Newsletter-first writers. If email is the business, a dedicated email tool gives you deeper segmentation and editing. Our best email marketing for creators guide compares them.
- Course businesses that need more learning tools. A course-first platform such as Thinkific is built around teaching, with extras like completion certificates (from its Start plan).
- Design-focused brands. Systeme.io's editor is template-driven, and some independent reviewers describe the templates as dated.
- Anyone without their own domain who doesn't want one. The sender-email rule makes a domain close to essential.

FAQ
Is Systeme.io really free?
Yes. Systeme.io says the free plan "never expires and does not require a credit card." You can stay on it as long as you stay within its limits: 2,000 contacts, 3 funnels, 1 course, 500 students, and 1 tag, automation rule, workflow and email campaign.
Can I use Gmail to send emails from Systeme.io?
No. Systeme.io's help center says @gmail.com sender addresses are no longer allowed, and Yahoo is blocked too. Use an address on your own domain. Without one, Systeme.io sends from a generic address and forwards replies to you.
Does Systeme.io take a percentage of my sales?
No. Systeme.io charges 0% transaction fees on every plan, including Free. You still pay Stripe's or PayPal's processing fees.
What happens when I hit 2,000 contacts on the free plan?
Systeme.io warns you for 3 days, then restricts the account until you upgrade or remove contacts. During a restriction, opt-ins, payments and campaigns stop, and students lose course access.
Is Systeme.io legit?
Yes, it's an established platform with a high overall Trustpilot rating. Low-star reviews mention support quality, account reviews and slow migrations, so keep backups of your contacts and course files.
Is Systeme.io cheaper than ClickFunnels?
At 10,000 contacts, yes: Systeme.io Webinar is $47 a month versus $97 for ClickFunnels Launch on monthly billing. Systeme.io also has a free plan.
The bottom line
Systeme.io's free plan is one of the cheapest ways to launch a first offer: a funnel, checkout, email list and course on your own domain, with 0% transaction fees.
What you outgrow first usually isn't contacts. It's the single tag, rule and campaign, or the single course. When you add a second freebie or product, Startup at $17 a month ($170 paid yearly) fixes those limits for less than most single-purpose tools cost.
If email is your whole business, look at Kit. If teaching is, look at Thinkific. For everyone else who wants one low-cost system to sell online, Systeme.io is easy to recommend.
